All-Natural versus Store-Bought?

Usually, the first question I get asked when someone hears about our soap or just all-natural soap in general is, "What is the difference between your soap and 'my' soap?" This is the best question someone can ask! I usually ask what their favorite soap is and where they purchase it, and there's generally a big difference. They learn they are not using real soap at all. Today, I decided to explain in a way that hopefully helps you decide on where you stand with your soap too!

The primary difference between all-natural soap and store-bought soap lies in the ingredients and production processes used.

The Ingredients

All-Natural Soap: Typically made from natural ingredients like plant-based oils and butters such as olive, coconut, and shea butter, essential oils, and natural colorants. These soaps often avoid synthetic additives, preservatives and artificial fragrances.

Store-Bought Soap: Often contains synthetic ingredients such as detergents (sodium lauryl sulfate) more on this later. They often contain artificial fragrances, colors and preservatives. These can be harsher on the skin and may cause irritation for some people.

The Production Process

All-Natural Soap: Generally made using traditional methods such as cold process soap making, which preserves the natural glycerin produced during saponification. Glycerin is a humectant, which keeps the skin moisturized.

Store-Bought Soap: Often produced using a continuous process, which can strip away the natural glycerin to be sold separately. This can result in a soap this is less moisturizing.

The Skin Benefits

All-Natural Soap: Tends to be gentler on the skin due to the lack of harsh chemicals and the presence of natural moisturizers.

Store-Bought Soap: Can sometimes be more drying and irritating due to the synthetic additives and the removal of glycerin.

The Environmental Impact

All-Natural Soap: Often more environmentally friendly, using biodegradable ingredients and minimal packaging.

Store-Bought Soap: May contain ingredients that are less environmentally and come in more substantial plastic packaging.

Overall

All-natural soap is preferred by those who prioritize natural ingredients, skin health and environmental sustainability, while store-bought soap is often chosen for its convenience and lower cost.
